A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors claim the network was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party applauded the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
