Paris Saint-Germain Defeats Olympique de Marseille on Penalties to Lift French Season-Opening Trophy in Kuwait.

Trophy celebration scene

PSG has now secured the season-opening trophy on 14 separate times.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a dramatic leveler followed by a successful penalty shootout to overcome Marseille in Kuwait and secure a record-extending fourth consecutive Trophee des Champions victory.

The European champions seemed to be coasting towards a straightforward triumph in the showdown between the French league champions and the Coupe de France holders after Ousmane Dembele found the net early on.

Yet, the southern French side struck twice in the closing moments to take a surprise lead. Initially, Mason Greenwood scored from the penalty spot, before the defender inadvertently turned the ball into his own net for an own goal.

In a remarkable turn of fortune, Goncalo Ramos snatched a vital equaliser in the final seconds to force the match into a penalty shootout. The Parisian shot-stopper Chevalier then emerged as the key figure, stopping crucial kicks from O'Riley and Hamed Traore.

In the shootout, Ramos, the midfielder, Nuno Mendes, and Desire Doue all scored with composure for Paris Saint-Germain to seal a 4-1 penalty win.

The record champions Paris Saint-Germain, who faced last season's Ligue 1 second-placed team Marseille after achieving a league and cup double, have now lifted this competition for the twelfth time in the last 13 seasons.
